Mechanical engineering students get the most from ASME (one universal application for ME/MET students, free membership in year one), ASHRAE ($3,000-$10,000, due April 1, including two $10,000 Willis H. Carrier awards) and AFCEA ($2,500-$5,000, which lists mechanical engineering as a qualifying major, opens Jan 1, 2027).
A focused list for ME and mechanical engineering technology (MET) students. Each row was read from the sponsor's official page on November 3, 2026.
| Program | Award | Deadline | Who qualifies |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASME Scholarships (Universal Application) American Society of Mechanical Engineers | Varies by award; e.g. John & Elsa Gracik $5,000 | 2027-28 date UNKNOWN until ASME posts it (last cycle: undergrad Feb 20, 2026; grad Mar 2, 2026) | ASME student members (free first year) in ABET ME/MET programs, full-time |
| ASME High School Senior Scholarships ASME / ASME INSPIRE | $2,000-$5,000 | Mid-March (last cycle Mar 15); 2027 date UNKNOWN | Graduating seniors entering an ABET ME/MET program, financial need, STEM activity |
| ASHRAE Undergraduate Engineering Scholarships ASHRAE | $3,000-$10,000 (incl. two $10,000 Willis H. Carrier awards) | April 1 (annual) | Full-time engineering students on an HVAC&R-prep path, 3.0+ GPA or top 30%, ABET or ASHRAE-branch school |
"UNKNOWN" means the sponsor page did not confirm it when we checked. Confirm every detail on the official page before applying.
ASME runs one Universal Scholarship Application for undergrads, 2+2 transfer students and graduate students. You must be an ASME student member (free for first-year college students, $25 otherwise), enrolled full time in an ABET ME/MET program, and taking at least 25% of your credits from the mechanical engineering department if your major is only "closely related." Money is paid to your school for the next academic year. The 2026-27 window is closed, and ASME had not posted 2027-28 dates when we checked, so we list them as UNKNOWN rather than guess.
ME students headed into HVAC&R, building energy or thermal systems should apply to ASHRAE by April 1. One application considers you for every Society scholarship you qualify for. Your school needs an ASHRAE student branch or ABET accreditation.
AFCEA's STEM Major Scholarship lists mechanical, aerospace and robotics engineering. It is for full-time sophomores and juniors with a 3.0 GPA who are US citizens or permanent residents.
Back to all engineering scholarships, wider STEM scholarships, trade school scholarships for MET and technician routes, and $5,000-$10,000 awards.
The core set is ASME's scholarships (one application for ME/MET students), ASHRAE's $3,000-$10,000 awards including two $10,000 Willis H. Carrier scholarships, and AFCEA's STEM Major Scholarship, which lists mechanical engineering. SWE and NSBE add large pools for women and Black engineering students.
For 2026-27 it was Feb 20, 2026 (undergrad, extended) and Mar 2, 2026 (grad), and the application is now closed. ASME had not posted 2027-28 dates on November 3, 2026; past cycles closed in February-March.
Yes. ASME scholarships go to ASME student members in good standing. Membership is free for first-year college students and $25 for others.
For ASME, yes: the scholarships cover ME and MET programs that are ABET-accredited or equivalent. ASHRAE also has engineering technology scholarships. Check each award's program rules.
Yes. ASME's high school senior awards ($2,000-$5,000, including ASME INSPIRE) have used a mid-March deadline for students entering an ABET ME/MET program in the fall.
