Writers, researchers, and scholars are invited to participate in the Eur-Asian Border Lab Essay Contest 2025 — a unique opportunity to explore the concept of borders in innovative and critical ways. This international essay competition encourages participants to analyze the evolving roles of borders in shaping spatial and political landscapes.
Organized by the Eur-Asian Border Lab, this essay contest 2025 is open to individuals of all nationalities with an interest in border studies, geopolitics, or creative academic expression. The selected winner will receive a fully funded trip to Estonia to attend the Lab’s final event at Tallinn University from October 8 to 11, 2025.

Essay Topics:
Participants should respond to one or both of the following questions:
- What is or will be the role of borders in ordering spaces?
- What could be alternative technical and discursive landscapes of control and power?
Essays can take empirical, conceptual, or metaphorical approaches and may include visual or artistic elements such as photos, sketches, poems, or drawings. Submissions should be original, unpublished, and logically structured around a clear argument.

Eligibility Criteria:
- Open to all nationalities
- Essay length: 1,200–1,500 words
- Visual materials must be original and high-quality (JPEG preferred)
- All participants must own copyright for submitted content

- File name should match your essay title
- Do not include your name in the essay document
- Submit a separate cover letter (PDF) with:
- Your full name
- Essay title
- List of all attached or linked visual materials
- Large files can be shared via WeTransfer, or uploaded to YouTube, Vimeo, or Google Drive (include URL in the essay and cover letter)
- All supporting images must include a caption with a title and explanatory context. Author name should only appear in the cover letter.
